The Best Woods University is simply a collection of amazing books that have helped shape my life and my company. They are inspiring books that are full of truth, time-proven principles and many powerful messages for life.
When I started Best Woods over 11 years ago in my little garage, I had some very unique and amazing experiences that solidified in my mind a clear vision of what this company would become. Nevertheless, I had no idea how to make this Vision in my mind a reality–I was clueless! However, as I look back I can see how principles taught in these books have given me light and direction and helped us become the company we are today.

STANDING FOR
SOMETHING
~ Gordon B. Hinckley
This book has had the greatest single impact on our company from the beginning. The principles taught in this book are time proven principles that will never change. They will work in every situation, in any time period. It is impossible to read this book and not find somewhere you can improve.
If our nation would read and apply the principles taught in this book, the end result would be stronger and more trustworthy companies and individuals, honesty in our politics, fidelity in our marriages, happiness in our families, and financial stability in each of our lives and our country. Patriotism would be bolstered, freedoms would be defended, and our acknowledgment of and dependence on God would flourish. Sound too good to be true . . . Well maybe for all of America, but maybe not for you. You can do amazing things if you are willing to stand for something you believe in. “We stand for that which is right. We stand for truth and honor, even when it is unpopular to the world, or places us in an unfavorable position. GOOD TO GREAT
~ Jim Collins
I believe Good to Great is still one of the best business books ever written. We have applied more principles from this book in our company through the years than from any other business book.
The beauty of this book is found in its time-proven principles. True principles, when read, have a certain ring–or feeling associated with them. Have you ever noticed that? Every time I read Good to Great I am amazed at how many true, timeless principles are found in it. Facing the brutal facts and looking under the rocks at the squiggly things, developing a hedgehog concept, becoming deeply passionate about what you do, disciplined thought and action, getting the right people on the bus and in the right seat, and the "flywheel effect." There are so many flywheel effects. There are somany applicable truths in that book–I cannot wait to read it again! I learn something new, or I am moved to make more improvements, every time I read it. Like all of these books, I have read Good to Great numerous times.
Recently, many have scoffed because a few of the Good To Great companies have faltered. However, I am quick to defend them in saying, had they not left their timeless principles, the ones that governed them for decades, they would not have fallen.

E-MYTH REVISITED
~ Michael Gerber
This book struck a inner chord in me the very first time I read it. Tears often flowed as Michael Gerber exposed many realities of starting a business. It is brutal–starting a business—and this book brings many realities to the surface. I have lived by many principles taught from this book. Some were instinctive to me and others required much work and personal effort that I’m still putting forth today. For example, what was behind the amazing environment at a cozy hotel outside of San Francisco and the systems that created that unique and consistently tranquil setting? Work on your business not in your business, be system-dependent, not people-dependent. These are just a few of the principles taught in this book.

Satisfied customers are not enough. They must become Raving Fans. This is the jist of this quick read. However, remember that a small rudder can steer a mighty ship. An important principle I learned earliy on in this book was to define your box, and not to go outside of that box–but what you do inside of that box you must do perfectly every time. If you deliver consistently to your customers time and time again, they become your greatest marketing force–because they are raving fans who will be more valuable than your highest paid salesperson.

Who Moved My Cheese is about learning to adapt to change. This is another short, but powerful, read. If you do not learn to see and recognize change, you will become extinct. This is hard for many who really like things the way they are and inherently resist change, but is it essential for survival. Our company is all about change, and the principles taught in this book have literally saved us.

Inspiring–this is one of my all time favorite books! You can accomplish great things and your potential is limitless. We are the one that places limitations on ourselves. I believe this book is founded on the eternal principle of progression. We have been created after the image of our creator–and we have incomprehensible capabilities and potential. We can experience incredible levels of understanding and progress in this life if we will work, believe, and remove our fears. We can accomplish great things. Well worth the 45 inspiring minutes to read!

WINNERS NEVER CHEAT

The self-made billionaire speaks out on honesty, and generosity.
Your word is your bond, and it is your sacred duty to give back. It is that simple. This incredible man’s hand shake cost him $54 million dollars. He had a chance to back out–no contracts were signed, but his handshake is his honor–it's better than a contract. What else can I say? This book has also changed my life. Soon after reading this, we remodeled the home of a widowed mother of four children–I spent two weeks of my own personal time during that Christmas season working on this home. They were two of the best weeks I can remember.
