Awards
Best Woods has won a stack of awards through the years—so many we cannot list them all. One we will mention is the 2008 "Remodel Project of the Year" award.

The Jones' are a modest retired couple from Vernal. They bought a beautiful estate on the outskirts of town with a 5,100 square foot existing home and a separate garage with living quarters above. The home was very plain with narrow oak trim around the doors and windows. Jenny and Wayne visited the Utah Valley Parade of Homes during the spring of 2007 and were impressed with many of the beautiful homes. They felt a difference when walking into those distinctive homes. They made a decision and started a quest to create the same environment they experienced in those parade homes in their existing home.  Jenny called me, we met at her home, and we began the process of transforming their new environment.  This included help with designing the space, beautiful woodworking and architecture, flooring, colors, lighting and decor, combining all of these elements together to create their new and unique environment.

This home features the following:

Entry: We installed a new entry door with transoms and specialty glass and painted it a stunning red. We installed v-groove on the ceiling to set apart the entry. We also added a wall and a closet in the entry to bring symmetry to the room. Before that simple modification, the room was lopsided and felt very awkward. We also placed traditional lintels on both sides of the 6' opening into the living room.  Designer lighting completed the space.

Living Room: This room is stunning! Everything works together so well. Traditional lintels, louvers, and beautiful casings around the large window grace this ample room. Crown molding and batten board line the walls. Hardwood floors border the room, with carpet filling the center, a beautiful sectional sofa literally fills the room with seating for twelve, with accenting red pillows and lamp shades.  The focal point of the room is a hardwood fireplace that complements the large adjacent window.

Dining Room:  This is the highlight of the main floor. It features a 5' recessed panel wainscot around the entire room, and lintels on all the windows and passageways. The black walnut floor establishes the strength of the room.  The beautiful coffered ceiling with v-groove planking shows a hint of color between the coffers. During the construction of this ceiling, the planking was first installed across the entire ceiling and then the beams were installed. Finally the crown was carefully pieced together to fit inside the rectangles. Notice the decorative lighting is perfectly placed between the beams. Sitting Room:  4" crown molding continues through the entire main floor offset by careful accent painting. Batten board also continues through this room. New base and doors were added throughout the entire house.

Laundry/Bath: Best Woods installed lintels on all the doors and windows, and the bathroom has 4' beadboard wainscot with a simple cove ledge cap.

Master Bed Room:  This room has a 3' beadboard treatment and 4" crown around the entire room. We also added lintels on top of the doors and windows. The Master bathroom has 6' beadboard around the toilet with a 6" corbel shelf.

Upstairs-Loft:  The stairs leading to the second floor were torn out and replaced with hardwood end caps and hand rail. We decided to paint rather than replace the existing oak handrail and beams that went to the ceiling. We complemented the tall ceilings with a 10' batten board. This was the first time we used this tall of an application and it turned out awesome!

Upstairs Rooms:  There are three bedrooms upstairs. Each room has a unique wall treatment—some with batten board and some with a lattice board treatment. All of the ceilings upstairs have v-groove plank.  All the doors and windows have lintels.

The Loft Room:    This room feels like something you would find at a bed and breakfast inn. It has 42" batten lattice board all the way around the room. We added v-groove to the vaulted ceiling. The lintels on the doors and windows give it a cozy cottage look. Overhanging the room is a loft with hardwood box newels and hand rail.

Note: Most all of the woodworking in this house was manufactured by Best Woods before the installation process started. We call these products “ready to install” Classic Woodworking. This included over 60 lintels for all the doors and windows, box newels, and all the beams for the coffered ceiling. Many of the caps on the batten board and beadboard were pre-manufactured to ensure consistent end results and reduction of both time and money.

Apartment
: We call the living space above the garage “the apartment.” The apartment is about 1,200 square feet. We transformed this living space by replacing all the doors and moldings, adding 3' beadboard around the entire room, and lintels on all the doors and windows. The apartment was also used for many of our people to sleep in while working on the project.

The Dining Room Table: Jenny could not find the right table for her new dining room. The dining room is rectangular, much longer than it is wide.  With this 18 foot dining room, Jenny needed a table that would adjust out to exactly 10' 6".  I called her one day after the project was finished and asked her if I could build her a custom black walnut table. She agreed, and we went to work designing it. When the design was complete Jenny was thrilled! It was just what she wanted. This table is one-of-a-kind, just meant for the Jones' home.
